Offhand, I'd say Java is probably OK regardless of what happens to Sun,
but since IBM is very strongly committed to Java, even Sun's work on
Java stands to be considerably solidified should the purchase / merger
come to fruition.

I'd rather agree with him. Sun is an alternative to IBM and it won't be seen as such anymore after a take-over.

Years ago we made a rush conversion from Informix to Oracle. The trigger was IBM buying Informix and the CIO of our customer overcame his disgust of Oracle (10 years earlier he threw Oracle out). OK, this guy was a nut-job ...
