2.9.0.1 - intolerable slow install during docs sub folders....

I downloaded and did -

java -jar scala-2.9.0.1-installer.jar

with jdk 6 update 19 which is the last update from
the erstwhile Sun Microsystems.

When the install of the devel-docs was taking place
every html file was being copied at the rate of one every 1 or even 2 seconds.
Windows task manger showed one core was 100% utilized by
java.exe.

I terminated this unacceptably slow
install.

Now I don't have Scala on my system :(

I remember going through a similar but completed
slow install of 2.8.1 when it was first released.

Would some one tell how I can fix the slow speed
and have a 2.9.0.1 up and running ?

Windows XP Sp 3, 2.13 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB
RAM

Re: 2.9.0.1 - intolerable slow install during docs sub folders..

Hi

maybe you could try with java option -Xmx:1536M (you have 4GB),
because during compiling of Scala sources I had an out of heap space
during the Scaladoc. It probably uses an absurd amount of heap space
memory during Scaladocs while compiling the sources so maybe also
while installing.

I always use the Windows zip file and extract it
and set SCALA_HOME and add %SCALA_HOME%\bin to my PATH environment
manually.

And why don't you use 2.9.1.RC1. The REPL is faster and you have the
latest library.

Good luck and happy Scala. :)

That did not improve things.

Re: 2.9.0.1 - intolerable slow install during docs sub folders.

There was a bug where the installer was extracting the whole jar for
every single file or some such, which resulted in excessive
installation times. Perhaps you are affected by this? I'm not sure if
the bug is fixed already.

But why don't you just download the zip file? Just extract is to a
directory of your liking, create a SCALA_HOME environment variable
pointing to it and add the bin directory to your PATH variable and
your done. At least that's what I always do.

Re: 2.9.0.1 - intolerable slow install during docs sub folders..

Compression seems to be the culprit.
If you want to use the jar installation you have repack without
compression.
See:

Never tried it but it seems to work:
Izpack
http://izpack.org/

But I think the windows zip file solution is a simpler and faster
workaround

Re: Re: 2.9.0.1 - intolerable slow install during docs sub fold

Would someone be willing to send me the jar (2.9.0.1 installer) repacked
without compression as suggested at
http://www.scala-lang.org/node/9670#comment-41340

Marcin Wisnicki, Would you ?

Thanks

He made an issue on this in Jira yesterday.
It helps to vote:

You boycott Oracle's JDKs?
