Please help us with the testing of this release candidate, and
let us know of any binary incompatibility issues, or other
problems. The list of improvements in Scala 2.8.2 RC1 is
available below.

+1 for all the great work here.  Thanks for continuing to put these releases out Toni.
I'm happy to see the continuing support for 2.8 in the sense that it shows a growing maturity in the platform.

Re: Scala 2.8.2 RC1
Is there any hope of getting fixes backported for https://issues.scala-lang.org/browse/SI-3687 and other, related, Enumeration bugs?
These are particularly nasty regressions from 2.8.0.

==============================

This Release Candidate is made available for testing purposes
only and is not intended for production environments. We will
wait at least two weeks before issuing a final release, in order
to allow developers and testers to send us their feedback.

(see https://codereview.scala-lang.org/fisheye/changelog/scala-svn?cs =XXXXX)

Note: at this time we are phasing out our old sbaz package
manager in order to move to newer tools like Maven, sbt, etc.
Sbaz is currently deprecated, and it will no longer be available
as part of the Scala distribution in the future.

+1 Would be really nice if this could go in.

I tried to install the new version with sbaz upgrade:

asux:~/proj/mini/forum > sbaz upgrade
Refreshing list of available packages...
Planning to install scala/2.9.0.1...
Planning to install scala-devel/2.9.0.1...
Planning to install scala-documentation/2.9.0.1...
Planning to install scala-library/2.9.0.1...
Planning to install scala-tool-support/2.9.0.1...
Planning to install scalacheck/1.9...
Installing...

But then:

asux:~/proj/mini/forum > scala
:3: error: object List is not a value
List(1) map (_ + 1)
^

Where shall I begin to search for an error?

That means it thinks "List" is "java.util.List". It could be other
things called List, but that's the heavy favorite. I don't know how you
might have arrived at that station though. There are a lot of command
line options which will tell you things, most of which will give some
indication of how that's happening. Try -Xprint:all, -Ylog-classpath,
many more if those don't do it. scalac -help, scalac -X, scalac -Y if
you're feeling nutty.

Well - I thought I tried sbaz to update before, and didn't make the step
from 2.8.something to 2.9 - maybe it was 2.9.0-RC why it didn't. But I
thought it would stay at 2.8 until I tell it to update to 2.9, but sbaz
installed the 2.9.0.1 version now.

I have a symbolic link /opt/scala -> /opt/scala-2.8 but that was
overriden with the 2.9er version. So I renamed it to scala-2.9,
downloaded the -2.8-tar.gz, and installed that by hand. Startet scala:
> 2.8.2.RC1 - uff; wonderful.

made a cd to scala-2.9/bin, startet ./scala: scala 2.9.0.1 wonderful.

Problem solved, but don't know what the problem was. There is no
startscript or symbolic link - just /opt/scala/bin is in the PATH.

Re: Scala 2.8.2 RC1
Just wanted to note that sbaz is deprecated.  So, unfortunately, while I really want to help debug sbaz issues, it's for a system that will be removed most likely in the next release.
