readers and failed-to-writers

I just discovered that I don't have write access to scala/xml in trunk. I stripped out the xml bits from the patch I was
comitting, but in case someone with access would like to patch them (and improve the patches while they're at it, these were
just bandaids really) these were to address meaningless equality comparisons found by findbugs. IOW as-was they're guaranteed
false.
